Local SEO, the basics

In one sentence

Local SEO comes down to a consistent and complete profile in the places where people and search engines check your business.

The basics of local SEO consist of a complete business profile that is identical everywhere, listings on the main local platforms and reviews that show you run a real, active business.

That sounds straightforward and it demands precision. Search engines only trust a local business once the name, address and phone number appear exactly the same everywhere, from your own site to every directory you are listed in. A difference of a single abbreviation can already raise doubt about whether this is the same business. That makes local SEO less a matter of creativity and more a matter of being consistent in places you often do not manage yourself.

What your Google Business Profile needs

  • Complete details. Fill in every field, from opening hours to category, because an empty field is a missed chance to show trust to Google and to a potential customer alike.
  • Current photos. Recent photos of the premises, the team or the work show the business is still active, while dated photos send the opposite signal.
  • Regular updates. A profile that has not been touched for a year looks less reliable than a profile with recent posts or adjusted opening hours around holidays.
  • The right categories. Choose the main category carefully and add secondary categories as well, so your business can appear for more relevant searches.

Why NAP consistency is the foundation

  • NAP stands for name, address and phone number. These three have to match exactly in every place your business is listed, down to the spelling of the street name and the use of abbreviations.
  • Small differences count. “Street 12” and “Street 12a” are read by some systems as two separate locations, which dilutes your trust rather than strengthening it.
  • Check it with every change. A move or a new phone number has to be updated on all platforms at the same time, otherwise confusion arises that damages your trust.
  • Do not forget old listings. A dated entry in a directory you created years ago keeps counting until you correct it or have it removed yourself.

Why reviews count for more than your own claims

  • Reviews are independent evidence. Someone searching locally reads a few recent ratings sooner than the text on your own site, because those ratings were not written by you.
  • Responding counts. Replying to reviews, including a critical one, shows there is an active business behind it that cares about its customers.
  • Spread beats volume alone. A steady stream of new reviews weighs more heavily than a peak of ten reviews in one week followed by silence, because that spread looks more natural.
  • Ask for reviews actively. Most satisfied customers leave no review on their own, so a short question after a job often yields more than waiting for someone to think of it.

What AI visibility does and does not earn you here

  • The return is still small. Research by the University of Hamburg with the Frankfurt School, covering 973 web shops, found that referrals from language models to websites stayed under 0.2 per cent of all sessions.
  • Local searches stay mainly with Google and Maps. Someone looking for a plumber nearby usually opens Google Maps or types it straight into Google, not into a chatbot.
  • That is no reason to leave local SEO alone. A good profile, consistent details and reviews already bring in traffic through Google itself. For now the AI side stays a small extra here and it does not warrant a separate project to steer on.
  • That can shift. As people use a chatbot more often for local recommendations, that share can grow, though until then it earns no separate investment alongside a well-filled foundation.

That last point is exactly why we say it plainly: for a B2B service provider, AI visibility can become a serious source of new customers, see the types of SEO for where that difference comes from. For a local shop or service the return sits mainly with Google itself for now. In wat is GEO you can read why those two worlds diverge so much. A good reputation, built through reviews and consistent listings, is also exactly the kind of evidence that E-E-A-T leans on, so those two tracks sit closer together than they appear at first glance.

A fictional example makes that concrete: a physiotherapy practice with three locations that uses the same text and the same photo on every location page looks to Google like a copy rather than three separate, fully fledged branches. Once each location gets its own page with its own team, its own opening hours and its own reviews, it becomes clear to visitor and search engine alike that these are three real, active practices. That effort is about the foundation that counts for every local search, separately from AI visibility, whether someone types it into Google or ever into a chatbot.

One last point that often gets skipped is local link building: a listing on the site of your own trade association, the municipality or a local business club contributes to trust just as much as a national backlink and is a good deal more achievable for most local businesses than a mention in the national press.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important part of local SEO?

A complete business profile that is identical everywhere, above all a name, address and phone number that match exactly in every place your business is listed.

Is it worth investing in AI visibility for a local business?

Little, for now. Research shows that referrals from language models stay under 0.2 per cent of all sessions, so the return is small next to a good Google profile.

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?

At least every quarter and straight away with any change to opening hours, address or phone number. A profile that sits still for long looks less active.
