Winning the answer box
You win the answer box with a short, literal answer placed right underneath the question.
You win the answer box by answering the question behind the search briefly and concretely in the first paragraph, so Google can lift that text straight off your page.
Google takes the text for the answer box literally from an existing page, usually a block of two or three sentences or a list of steps. The more explicitly you state and answer the question, the better the odds that your text gets picked over a competitor’s. That holds for more than Google alone, because the same structure gets taken over by AI answers.
How to build the text
- Question as heading. Put the exact question, or a variant of it, as a heading above the answer, so Google can see immediately which question this paragraph answers.
- Answer directly beneath it. The first sentence under the heading gives the full answer, without a run-up or a long introduction that delays the point.
- Keep the length short. Forty to sixty words is usually enough for a block of text, and a list may run a little longer as long as each step stays brief.
What the answer box is worth
- A position above the results. The answer box often sits above the organic results, above position one as well, which catches the searcher’s first glance.
- Citability for AI. The same clear structure Google uses for the answer box gets used by language models as a source, see hoe AI bepaalt wie het noemt.
- Competition on detail. The page that answers the question most sharply and briefly wins this more often than the page that covers the subject most broadly, which fits with recognising and using search intent.
So the answer box comes down to how you phrase things. Whoever states the question clearly and puts the answer straight underneath hands Google exactly the fragment it needs to quote.

Frequently asked questions
Can I decide that my page gets the answer box?
No, Google picks the source automatically based on how clearly and briefly the answer matches the question. You can improve the odds by answering the question literally.
Does this work for ChatGPT and other AI answers as well?
Largely, yes. Language models prefer to quote a short and concrete answer over a long, general introduction.
Do I lose traffic if someone already sees the answer in the box?
Sometimes, although a good answer box also brings name recognition and clicks through to your site for anyone who wants to know more.
